National Identification system on target

The Office of the Prime Minister said plans are on target for the establishment of the Government’s National Identification System.

It was announced by Prime Minister Bruce Golding in his Budget presentation in April.

At that time, the Prime Minister said a national identification system could also help in the fight against crime.

The system is expected to provide a comprehensive structure to capture and store personal identity information on people who live or work in Jamaica.

It will become the primary means of identification, and will also help to improve social and economic programmes.

The Office of the Prime Minister said Mr. Golding has been meeting with the heads of various government ministries and agencies to discuss the matter.

The most recent meeting was held on Friday.

The stakeholders included the ministries of national security, health, labour, social security and the Planning Institute of Jamaica.

Jamaica House said the ministries and agencies are undertaking the research and analysis for the implementation of the programme, which will be rolled out in phases starting in 2010.

Crime management, border control, health care delivery and education are being given priority attention under phase one of the programme

Social security, civil registry management, drivers’ licenses, revenue collection, and money laundering are also being prioritised under the first phase.
