At least two political commentators believe that there are lessons to be learnt by Jamaica’s politicians from the US electoral process and the speeches presented by the Democratic president elect Barrack Obama and defeated Republican candidate John McCain.

Obama scored a major victory over his rival, McCain, to become the first black President-elect of the United States of America.

Although only needing 270 Electoral College Votes to win the presidency, Obama won 338 to McCain’s 156 votes.

Gleaner columnist and political commentator, Martin Henry, said Jamaican politicians need to learn the graciousness of defeat, while celebrating victory.

Meanwhile. Kevin Obrien Chang is of the view that in order for a government to effectively function there has to be some measure of unity in the political process.
