British immigrant new ID system
Illegal immigrants in Britain are to face tougher rules following a new system of identification, which took effect yesterday.
The five tier identity card system will reduce the possibility of illegal immigrants gaining employment or accessing social benefits such as housing or health in Britain.
The British Home office is insisting that the card will protect against identity fraud and terrorism.
The mayor of London, Borris Johnson has been hinting at a possible amnesty through a study to determine how the British government could benefit from regularising the approximately 40,000 illegal immigrants.
With the implementation of the new system, applicants for the ID cards will have their fingerprints and photographs taken at six centres.
The cards will store biometric information such as fingerprints and an electronic impression of the applicant’s face.
The name, date of birth, nationality and details of the applicants right to work and stay in the country will also be printed on the front of the card.
Persons applying for students and marriage visas are to be among the first card holders.
