Morris Allen case again
The inquest into the 2001 killing of a resident of Mountain View in East Kingston by the police under questionable circumstances is expected to continue in the Coroner’s Court today.
Morris Allen was killed during a police military operation on January 19, 2001 in Mountain View.
The inquest had been on a break for more than a year after the Attorney General filed an application for a judicial review into an order made by the Coroner.
The Coroner had ruled that the Jamaica Defence Force board must produce to the courts all documents relating to its investigation into Morris’ death.
The Attorney General was seeking to have the Supreme Court rule against the order by the Coroner.
However, the application was struck out last month for want of prosecution after the Attorney General’s chamber failed to take the requisite steps for the matter to be heard.
The JDF will now have to produce its findings to the court.
Three soldiers who were involved in the incident have since been dismissed from the army.
The police reported that Mr. Allen and another man who were travelling in a car fired at a police/military team in the area when he was shot dead.
Residents claiming that Mr. Allen was murdered have challenged their version of the story.
