The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is to conduct a series of public consultations on the minimum wage across the island during this month.

The meetings, which started in 2005, are in an effort to give members of the public an opportunity to make representations before the Minimum Wage Advisory Commission.

More than 200,000 Jamaicans are paid minimum wages, which were last increased from $2,800 to $3,200 in January 2007.

The consultations took place in Manchester, St. Elizabeth and Clarendon on January 9, at the Mandeville Parish Church.

Similar meetings are scheduled for today in St. Andrew, St. Thomas and St. Catherine, at the Labour Ministry’s North Street offices.

Consultation meetings will also be held in St. Ann, Portland and St. Mary on January 11, at the Sand Castles Resorts in Ocho Rios.
