JPS face enormous maintenance bill

Jamaica Public Service (JPS) said it would be spending several million dollars to replace circuit breakers and relays on its power delivery system by year end.

On Wednesday, the country was plunged into darkness, after a wooden JPS pole located in a swamp at the Tredegar substation in St Catherine broke.

The light and power company said its circuit breakers failed to respond after the poll collapsed and resulted in the islandwide outage.

According to President and CEO of JPS, Damian Obiglio, the company is committed to upgrading the entire system.

JPS also said it will be employing a full time Senior Engineer within the month, to oversee the company’s transmission lines and substations.

The light and power company indicated that it spends more than $2 billion annually to maintain its systems.

JPS reported that the figure is likely to increase by at least 25 percent this year.
