J Wray and unions meet

Published:Tuesday | December 23, 2008 | 9:28 AM

The union representing workers at J Wray and Nephew is to meet with the company’s management at the labour ministry today.

The parties will be attempting to resolve a dispute between the management and workers.

Yesterday, the workers demonstrated outside the Kingston office to protest against a decision by the company to make several positions redundant.

Deputy Island Supervisor of the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) Granville Valentine, has accused the company of union busting.

Mr Valentine says the company breached several labour laws when it sent home the workers.

The union representative says if the company does not rescind on its decision the union intends to take the matter to the courts.

Mr Valentine says he is hoping an amicable solution will be reached during today’s meeting.
