PATH deadline extended

The ministry of labour has extended the deadline for the addition of approximately 115,000 persons to the Programme of Advancement through Health and Education, PATH.

The deadline has been extended until March next year.

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles, said that the extension would facilitate the inclusion of the requisite number of people to the programme.

He said the deadline is being extended because the target number of persons for the programme has not been found.

The exercise should have been completed by October 2008.

Mr Charles said he is hoping that by March more people will apply for benefit through the programme.

Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, had announced during the Budget Debate earlier this year that the government intended to increase the scope of PATH, to include all persons under the established poverty line.

Approximately 360,000 Jamaicans are under the poverty line and only 245,000 are benefiting from the PATH programme.
