JPS to inspect meters
The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has announced that it will as of this month be inspecting customers’ electricity meters on a more frequent basis.
The company said the move is part of measures being implemented to detect and respond to cases of meter tampering.
The light and power company said it has engaged specially trained meter inspectors to carry out more routine inspection of meters as it intensifies its fight against electricity theft.
JPS said once meter tampering is detected, it will immediately disconnect the customer’s power supply and remove the meters and wires from the premises.
The company said the customer would then have to visit its office and pay for the electricity determined to have been used but not paid for.
JPS said it would continue the implementation of projects aimed at reducing electricity theft.
It said the measures include the installation of the insulated or tamper proof power lines in more communities as well as expanding the use of the automated metering infrastructure.
