$48M for eye care project
The National Health Fund (NHF) is providing a $48 million grant to support the activities of Phase Two of the Jamaica /Cuba Eye Care Project.
Under this phase the programme will be expanded to include the provision of white canes to facilitate safe mobility of patients who are visually impaired.
1200 persons are expected to benefit from this initiative which is currently underway.
During phase two the project will focus on the parishes of Westmoreland, St James, Hanover and Trelawny.
Screening will be conducted over a period of 15 to 20 days in each parish.
The Jamaica/Cuba Eye Care Project is based on an agreement between the governments of the two countries.
The programme is aimed at reducing the prevalence of blindness among Jamaicans by providing cost effective eyecare services to affected persons.
The additional grant of $48 million for phase 2 brings the total amount of NHF grants for the Jamaica Cuba Eye Care Project to $80.4 million.
