Bruce Golding calls for changes to Standing Committee

The Prime Minister Bruce Golding wants changes to Parliament’s Standing Orders to prevent committees from lapsing when the House prorogues.

According to the Prime Minister, the lapsing of committees after a Parliamentary session ends is a hindrance to the work of lawmaking.

He wants this to be changed and the system, which now exists in Singapore adopted instead.

In that country, a Bill does not lapse when a Parliamentary session ends and all business continue in the next session.

Prime Minister Golding has submitted his recommendation to Parliament’s Standing Order Committee.

Mr. Golding said he’s anxious for the Committee to suggest how it could give oversight for appointments to key public sector posts.

These include board members of public agencies.

In a Jamaica House statement, Mr Golding said it’s important that the Government attracts competent and honest persons to serve in public posts.
