The Broadcasting Commission is seeking to have greater regulatory powers through an amendment of the legislation, which currently governs its operations.

The move follows a decision by the Commission over the weekend to ban songs with violent sexually explicit lyrics.

Chairman of the Commission Dr Hopeton Dunn said the entity would be making further recommendations to the government for changes to be made to the television and sound broadcasting regulations.

Dr Dunn said the commission will be recommending that the existing Broadcasting and Re-diffusion Act be cancelled and replaced with a more modern Act.

According to Mr Dunn musicians and other persons involved in the entertainment industry should not see the move as an attack on dancehall as soca and carnival songs will also be examined.

He said the Commission would be holding several meetings in the coming weeks with a number of persons including entertainers and their managers.

On Friday the commission placed a ban on all daggering songs, which it said are to be pulled from radio, television and cable stations.
