Prison unrest under control
Authorities at the Fort Agusta Correctional Centre in St Catherine said they have managed to restore order at the facility following an unrest among the occupants last night.
A week-long protest by juveniles at the women’s prison had escalated into a riot last evening, during which a correctional officer was stabbed on the hand.
Hours earlier, another was reportedly doused with faeces and urine by other juveniles.
Acting Commissioner of Corrections, June Jarrett, said prison officials are now considering several remedial measures to prevent a reoccurrence of the incident.
Among the measures being considered is the likely removal of the juveniles from Fort Agusta.
It was earlier reported that the unrest was sparked by the transfer of a group of juveniles from the Armadale Juvenile Correctional Facility in St Ann because of security reasons.
The adult inmates are demanding that the juveniles be removed from the Fort Agusta facility.
The National Security Ministry said it would begin an investigation into the circumstances, which led to the unrest at the Fort Agusta Adult Correctional Centre between last night and early this morning.
The probe should determine what led to the stand-off between inmates and correctional officers, and seek to implement corrective measures to prevent a reoccurrence.
