National security to investigate prison riot

The National Security Ministry is investigating the circumstances which led to the unrest at the Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre between last night and early this morning.

A week-long protest by juveniles at the women’s prison had escalated into a riot last evening, during which at least two correctional officers were injured.

Acting Commissioner of Corrections June Jarrett said prison officials are now considering several remedial measures to prevent a reoccurrence of the incident.

Among the measures being considered is the likely removal of the juveniles from Fort Augusta.

The unrest was sparked by the transfer of a group of juveniles from the Armadale Juvenile Correctional Facility in St Ann.
