Members of the Cabinet are to go into a three-day retreat beginning today.

The retreat will continue next week Saturday and end on Sunday, March 1.

The cabinet is meeting to continue its preparation of the 2009/2010 budget and explore among other things, measures to counter the current economic challenges facing the country.

During today’s session members will focus on issues related to the economy and the impact of the global environment on Jamaica as well as the fiscal programme for the next financial year.

Next week Saturday, cabinet members are expected to speak on issues relevant to their respective areas of responsibility.

Deliberations will also be held on the outcome of a strategic planning session held last month.

The retreat follows a number of meetings in which cabinet members have been involved over recent weeks.

Minister without portfolio in the finance ministry, Senator Dwight Nelson says the government may have to make what he describes as unpopular decisions to deal with the effects of the current economic crisis.

He says the public will be informed of the decisions made following the retreat.
