Education Ministry responds to Dunoon attack

The ministry says it is shocked and saddened by an incident at the Dunoon Technical High School in East Kingston yesterday in which a male student was stabbed.

The injured student is in hospital in stable condition while his attacker, a school mate, reportedly ran away after the incident.

Three other students who have been linked to the stabbing have been taken into custody by the police.

The Education Ministry says its zero-tolerance approach to violent behaviour among students is outlined in its Safety and Security guidelines distributed to schools.

Additionally it says principals are the chief security and safety officers of schools, and are responsible for planning and administering the day to day security and safety arrangements at their institutions.

The Jamaica Association of Secondary School Principals says some of its members are faced with resource constraints.

A team of counselors is expected to visit Dunoon today to address affected teachers and students.
