Prime Minister, Bruce Golding is to launch the National Food Security Programme (NFSP) on Thursday at Agri-Invest, a one day seminar and exposition at Mona Visitor’s Lodge and Conference Centre.

In a release from the Ministry of Agriculture who will be staging the seminar, Hershell Brown, Chairman of the Steering Committee of Agri-Invest and NFSP and Director of the Agricultural Support Unit in the Ministry said food prices are expected to rise this year. “The projections for 2009 are that food prices will continue to increase and that this will pose a serious threat to the food security of food importing countries such as Jamaica.”

Brown also said “as a net importer of food, Jamaica is particularly challenged and therefore there is an urgent need for additional investment in the agriculture sector in order to bring about the increases in production and productivity.”

Agri- Invest will afford prospective investors the opportunity to learn about viable investment opportunities, as well as marketing and support services available to facilitate investment in the sector.

Presentations, exhibits and panel discussions will take the investor through the different steps from availability of land, development and financing of the business plan through to the technical assistance and support services available.
