Cabinet to issue Whistleblower law

The Cabinet has issued drafting instructions for the long awaited Whistleblower Legislation.

However, it is unlikely that debate on the Bill will begin before the next legislative year, which begins on April 1.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice Senator Dorothy Lighbourne said while the Chief Parliamentary Council has been given drafting instructions there was no guarantee when the Bill will be ready for debate.

Senator Lightbourne said the legislation is being given priority treatment, as the government wants to provide protection for persons who blow the whistle on wrong doers in the public and private sectors.

She was addressing journalists at the weekly post cabinet media briefing today.
