Overweight trucks to pay fine

In the next three months drivers found operating overweight trucks will be fined.

This is part of efforts by the Transport and Works Ministry to minimise the damage to roadways.

Last week a US$500 million contract was signed for the installation of four weighing scales for trucks.

The scales will be placed in the vicinity of the Ferry Police Station in St Catherine, Harbour View in St. Andrew, Coral Spring in Trelawny, and Agualta Vale in St. Mary.

State Minister for Transport and Works Joseph Hibbert, said the scales will be placed along the side of the designated roadways and the trucks diverted onto them.

He said if trucks are overladen, the excess material would be off loaded to the side of the road and the driver allowed to continue.

He said drivers will be given 24 hours to retrieve their materials.

A survey conducted by the National Works Agency (NWA) revealed that majority of trucks tends to carry more than their 10 tonne-limit.
