Vaz scoffs at Dabdoub's claims

Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) candidate for West Portland Daryl Vaz has scoffed at claims that attorney-at-law Abe Dabdoub is returning to the courts to extend the dual citizenship battle.

Mr. Dabdoub had been successful in getting the courts to rule that Mr. Vaz was ineligible to sit in the House of Representatives following the 2007 General Election.

However the courts did not award the seat to Mr. Dabdoub and instead ordered a by-election.

Stay tuned for more story in the 5 p.m. newscast.

Last Friday, Mr. Vaz was nominated to represent the JLP in the seat while the PNP nominated Kenneth Rowe.

However, Mr. Dabdoub is still not convinced that the JLP candidate is now qualified to sit in the House and he wants to return to the courts for a determination.

At a press conference this morning, Mr. Vaz again sought to convince the media that he had cut all ties with the United States.

He also presented to the media copies of his birth certificate, his Jamaican passports and a certificate of declaration of loss of nationality.

Mr. Vaz also expressed his disappointment that the question of his dual nationality had again been raised.

Mr. Vaz had won the 2007 general election defeating Mr. Dabdoub by more than 900 votes.

However he was ousted by the courts, which ruled that by his action he had sworn allegiance to another country.

Mr. Vaz responded by renouncing his US citizenship but Mr. Dabdoub has argued that the court should again make a determination, as the country cannot accept the word of the JLP candidate.
