Tufton visits Portland on farm tour
Agriculture Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton is now on a 2-day farm tour of several communities in Portland.
Dr. Tufton said during the tour, he will be seeking to encourage more young people to get involved in farming.
The tour is also expected to include other activities such as viewing of recently repaired roads in West Portland districts like Mount Pleasant, Rock Hall, Industry, Shrewsbury Fruitful Vale and Buff Bay.
The Agriculture Minister is also scheduled to visit the community of Bangaridge for a coffee farmers’ training exercise.
Dr. Tufton is to meet with unions representing sugar workers next week to discuss matters relating to redundancy payments.
He says the Jamaica Sugar Cane Growers Association will also be involved in the meeting.
He’s also expected to give an update on the divestment of the country’s sugar assets.
Fourteen companies have submitted proposals to buy Jamaica’s sugar assets.
Dr Tufton said the Cabinet has mandated the Sugar Negotiating Team to engage in talks with the entities to conclude the divestment as soon as possible.
