Opposition appeals to health minister
The People’s National Party (PNP) wants the health minister Rudyard Spencer to move quickly to stave off a possible strike by the island’s junior doctors.
The Junior Doctor’s Association has warned that members will be taking industrial action next week.
They are disappointed about the discussions with the Ministry of Finance and the Public Sector over wages for the 2008/2010 period.
Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Fenton Ferguson said the health minister should intervene to prevent the country’s health sector from being compromised.
It\'s not the first time that the Finance Minister and the Junior Doctors are at odds.
In 2002, both parties were involved in a dispute surrounding negotiations for the wage contract for the period April 2000 to March 2002.
The Government and the association had been in discussion since June 2002 but were not able to arrive at an agreement.
The matter was subsequently referred to the Labour Ministry.
