Lack of security at UWI Mona campus worrisome

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The state of campus security at the University of the West Indies, Mona is at best lacking and at worst the current state of affairs. The campus has a plethora of people from all regions of the world; also roaming around on campus are stray dogs and the odd beggar alike as if it is a great free for all affair.

Amid the car thefts, gunpoint robberies and a severely underperforming security details we must ask ourselves, “Is the University of the West Indies Mona the pride of the Caribbean’s academic space?”

Surely with the exorbitant fees for being enrolled at UWI, not to mention the critical costs associated with boarding at any of the university’s halls, surely there should be enough to cover security expenses on campus. Alas, the situation and the university experience has shifted from the happy-go-lucky networking environment to an on edge, unbalanced and unsafe one.

The University of the West Indies Mona administration must do more if it is to justify and signal to current and future students that the campus is safe and it is up to the international standards attributed to an educational institution of its stature.
