‘Standard of Baby Show highest in years’
THE STANDARD of this year’s annual Baby Show, held at the Creche yesterday afternoon, was the highest it has been in years, shared Dr Hyacinth Lightbourne. She is the second medical health officer for the Corporate Area, one of the judges, at the show.
Imogene Samuel, aged one year and one month, was chosen champion baby of the show by the judges. The other judges were Dr Lawrence Moody, Dr Eric Hoerman, Dr J. W. Pinkerton, Dr Joyce Forde-Smith, and Dr A. Stewart.
One hundred and twenty-six babies were entered for the contest, and prizes were offered for the first three places in the five age groups into which the competitions were divided.
Prizes for exhibition work done by mothers and fathers, also for posters dealing with Baby Week and childcare in general were entered by girls from St Hugh’s Immaculate Conception, St Andrew High School, and Titchfield High.
Mr Michael deCordova, president of the Child Welfare Association, officiated in place of the Hon Mrs Rose Leon, minister of health and housing, who was on the programme to distribute the prizes but did not attend.
After handing out the prizes, Mr deCordova thanked the ladies, doctors, and nurses who had helped to make the Baby Show a success and led the mothers in three cheers.
Baby Week, of which the baby show is the high spot, is sponsored by the C.W.A. each year.
