District constables have no representation
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am using my tongue as the pen of a ready writer to voice the level of frustration among district constables who are working twice as hard as the regular constables to make Jamaica a safe and friendly society. We are bombarded with serious problems on a daily basis at work. We are often looked down on by rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. We were told that we are the lowest branch on the tree, even on duty on the road we are being disrespected by citizens.
Why weren't we given the blue seam uniform? Most persons don't recognise our uniform as police personnel. It is the same uniform that the port security company's members wear, and those from other security companies, too. District constables are police, we do the very same job as the regular constables, we are sent to work in the zones of special operation, states of emergency and other operations as well.
I also strongly believe that district constables should be getting all the amenities as a regular constable.
We have the United District Constables Association who should be representing us, but I honestly don't see or feel any form of representation for us. We are left in the dark because of the lack of communication from our nonchalant president and delegates.
We, the district constables of Jamaica, would like the president to step down and the delegate board reshuffled. Mr President, give it to someone who will have the district constables interest at heart, someone who is willing to represent and stand up for us to be treated better and get a better pay package. Mr President, we are frustrated and tired of your nonchalant behaviour. You are not representing us in any way.
