Stand up for neglected youth

THE EDITOR, Madam:
PROFESSOR ROSALEA Hamilton wrote a brilliant and powerful piece of how to handle the economy at the psychological moment with interventions which are viable and can be far-reaching. She claims we need to restructure the economy to involves micro- and small-business persons within the society to play significant parts for the upward movement of the economy. In the 1970s the main term that was used to restructure the economy was to embark on a structural adjustment plan of action. Lands were given to many communities in the 1970s, like the Julius Nyerere Farm in Shacklewood, Hanover, which saw many unemployed and underemployed youngsters getting another lease in life. This Nyerere Farm was the brainchild of the great Michael Norman Manley, who stood for the disenfranchised struggling youth of such an era.
We could embark on a similar route and take the unemployed youngsters out of the quagmire. This would augur well for the upward trajectory in our growth curve. We will definitely have to incorporate the little man in our every move to strengthen our economy. That is not to say we are going to strangle the big capitalist, who could also play a pivotal role in our route to success. With Covid-19 on our heels every step of the way, we have to integrate our ideas to formulate the best workable plans for our survival.
Professor Hamilton is a critical thinker who has the country’s best interest in her heart. Prime Minister Andrew Holness needs to examine some of these salient, innovative strategies/ideas from the arsenal of Professor Hamilton.
Being a woman of the neocolonial era, she has the requisite dynamism and capacity to give the economy a boost with her activism, which we could work with instead of opening the economy fully at this time.
