Rock to Ashley roadway solid as a rock

THE EDITOR, Madam:

It would be remiss of me to remain silent about what I consider to be the best constructed piece of road anywhere in Jamaica. Anywhere? Yes, anywhere. What about the toll roads? one may ask. I say that the toll roads remain intact because of proper maintenance.

The piece of road from Rock to Ashley in Clarendon was constructed over 10 years ago and it remains largely intact although, to the best of my knowledge, no maintenance work has been done since its construction. From time to time citizens have done minor patching in a few spots, but the road remains solid.

The road was properly engineered, in hilly terrain. Proper drains were built to prevent the water from damaging the road surface. The right type of materials in the right proportions were used in the construction of this road. Obviously, we were not shortchanged in this endeavour.

A few years ago, I was about to publicly commend those responsible for the construction of this road when I heard a comment, on radio, that prevented me from doing so.

The comment was that people who do a good job are frowned upon because in doing the road properly they prevent these roads from becoming “feeding trees.”

I did not, and still do not, want those responsible for doing an excellent job to suffer any repercussions.

My intention is to highlight the fact that the road from Rock to Ashley in Clarendon is testament to the fact that Jamaicans can build properly engineered roads that can withstand the weather conditions even when well traversed.

I am contending that the road from Rock to Ashley is the best constructed road in Jamaica. If anyone knows any other road that can be compared with this, I would love to celebrate that with you. We must highlight the good things in our country.
