Thank you to two Jamaican heroes

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I want to say a big thank you to two heroes, Corporal Mattis from the Lottery-Amity Hall Police Station and Mr Clearton Bowlin from Sunderland, both located in St James. On June 23 my mother suffered a stroke. This caused her to drive aimlessly from Montego Bay, and she ended up in a place called Sunderland at 2:30 a.m.

Sunderland is in rural St James, approximately 45 minutes away from Montego Bay. A very kind, patient and compassionate man named Mr Clearton Bowlin found her in her car, as it was blocking the road. Mr Bowlin was actually on his way to the airport when he found her in a manic state at 7 a.m. Mr Bowlin took the time out of his schedule to ask my mother which friend or relative he could call, and proceeded to call my mother’s friend, then carefully followed her instructions as he took my mother in his car to the nearest police station. Mr Bowlin also made arrangements for a neighbour to drive her car to the police station.

At the police station, the officers, including Corporal Mattis, took great care of my mother in her time of crisis and coordinated with the mental health team at the Cornwall Regional Hospital for them to come and pick her up from the station. My mother was eventually hospitalised at Cornwall Regional. The officers tried their best to reach us, but could not get enough information from my mother to aid them in their search. When it came time for us to pick up her car, Corporal Mattis was generous enough to guide us from Portobello to Lottery-Amity Hall, as he knew that we would have been unable to locate it on Google Maps.

I want to thank Mr Bowlin and the officers at Lottery-Amity Hall Police Station. They were kind, caring, compassionate and responsive. I am genuinely appreciative of how they took care of my mother in her time of need.
