Come together to work towards becoming a republic

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Jamaicans at home and abroad must endeavour ourselves to ensure that the president and a congress is chosen in the United States of America from time to time, who are committed and dedicated to the preservation and advancement of democracy.

The records will reveal that, with the exception of Donald Trump’s leadership, the United States has been standing up against the faithful and for the preservation of democracy. Similarly, I call on all my brothers and sisters of voting age to make certain that we do all that is possible in a democratic way to get a new Constitution in place now, one that will have a fixed date for elections.

Electing a president and vice-president with autonomy and an assembly with elected people from both sides will endeavour to advance and preserve policy with the best interest of the country. A senate with elected senators, the president and the vice-president, will nominate elegible Jamaicans at home and aboard who have the integrity, a very good track record, and a career that reflects professional competence and commitment to serve this country above self.

The tenure of office should not exceed five years, both for the lower and upper house, to include the municipal corporations. We the Jamaicans, both at home and about, who are committed and dedicated Christ-like believers, must endeavour to ensure that every single member that is offering themselves for election at central and/or local election, a very thorough background checks must be conducted on each and every one for both central and municipal elections.

An entrenched integrity body is to be established that will have the fundamental power to bring light on anyone that is found conducting themselves in an adverse manner which is tantamount to degradation and destruction to the country. This body should have the power to seize assets and imprison anyone that is found guilty of these offences. The present political climate does not lend itself to a stable democratic process. We have been in a semblance of this kind of dictatorial politics that has created instability in all facets of our country.

One of the most painful and/or destructive measures we could ever find ourselves in is where it is perceived that our politicians on both sides give weapons to the unfortunate mind to kill each other to win an election. It is strongly felt, we have been there. But let me remind all concerned. Try as we may, those who are guilty will surely pay a very expensive price for such behaviour and will experience retribution. No-one will be killed, but the hands of the unseen power will surely chastise.

In closing, I pray unceasingly through our Saviour and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, that we sons and daughters of this part of the earth will experience a renewal that advances peace, goodwill, prosperity and bondless love to all of us through this time and there on.
