The Jamaica Labour Party's Mark McLean has been declared winner of the Homestead division of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation following Friday's by-election.

McLean polled 1,409 votes to the 136 received by the People's National Party's Janette Grayson.

Only 1,545 voters or 16.3 per cent of the 9,727 registered electors participated.

Homestead has voted for the JLP in the past 20 years.

McLean, an air conditioning technician, told The Gleaner he was enthused by the support.

"I am extremely thankful for the support of the people of Homestead. I will now turn my attention to providing effective representation for them at the Municipal Corporation continuing where my predecessor left off," he said.

Grayson was not available to comment but a spokesman for her office told The Gleaner that despite the results, she will continue to work for the people of Homestead.

The by-election was held because of the death of long-standing JLP councillor Owen Palmer.

Palmer who was killed in a motor vehicle crash in March of this year.

The final count is expected  to be done on Saturday.
