Brace for traffic changes on Mandela Highway tomorrow

The National Works Agency (NWA) is alerting the public that starting tomorrow there will be traffic changes along a section of the westbound corridor of Mandela Highway, in St Catherine.

As part of the changes, the NWA says westbound traffic will be directed to the right side of the roadway, starting in the vicinity of Tom Cringle Drive and the Six Miles Overpass Bridge.

Ramona Lawson, acting Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, said this to facilitate ongoing road reconstruction work along the southern section of Mandela Highway.

“Traffic headed to Portmore and Spanish Town will remain in two lanes, but will be shifted to the right as it exits Spanish Town Road on to the Mandela Highway,” Lawson explained.

She says the existing median strip will be removed, the area excavated, filled with subgrade material and paved to accommodate a section of the new driving lane.

However, Lawson says these works are not expected to affect the movement of traffic through the area.

In addition, she says work will continue on the westbound carriageway located on the southern side of the project to bring the driving lanes up to the height of the newly-constructed eastbound lanes between the East-West Highway Off Ramp and Tom Cringle Drive.

The $8 billion Mandela Highway Road Reconstruction Project includes the raising and widening of the roadway to a six-lane dual carriageway, bridge construction as well as drain improvement works.

It is expected to be completed by year end.
