Britain's Geraint Thomas is set to win the Tour de France.

This after Thomas, 32, maintained his overall lead on the penultimate leg of the annual multiple stage bicycle race in France;

Riding for Team Sky, Thomas finished third in the 31-kilometre time trial behind Tom Dumoulin, but still leads the Dutchman by one minute, 51 seconds.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, Tour de France convention dictates that the race leader is never challenged on the final stage.

This means Thomas only needs to reach the finish line in Paris tomorrow to win the famed race.

"It's insane. Tour de France! I can't believe it," he told reporters today.

"I'm really trying not to cry, it's unbelievable. I tried not to think about it, just take it day by day. I've won the Tour de France man, I don't know what to say," he added.

Today's results effectively end the quest by four-time defending champion Chris Froome to win a record-equalling fifth consecutive Tour de France title.
