Oracabessa, St Mary:

Mayor of Port Maria Richard Creary on Sunday slammed the People’s National Party (PNP) caretaker for South East St Mary, Shane Alexis, for what he claimed are negative comments made by that candidate about unclean drains in Richmond.

Creary, who was speaking at a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Area Council Two meeting in Oracabessa, St Mary, criticised Alexis for what he described are deliberate attempts made by the PNP candidate to not only put the St Mary Municipal Corporation in a bad light, but also to undermine the much-needed development taking place in Richmond.

“I was in my bed about 8 o’clock the other day watching news, when I received a phone call,” commented Creary.

He continued: “I was told that a little man, who called himself ‘Sugar Cane’, was in Richmond. But I know that whenever you juice out cane is only the trash leave, so I call him ‘sugar cane trash’. Imagine, we are upgrading the community centre, which is being fenced by the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports, and Education (CHASE) Fund, and, as a result of digging holes for the poles, a little dirt roll down in the drain.

“This is a drain that I have been responsible for over the past 15 years, as the PNP was not cleaning it. This man, before him stay a town (Kingston) and gwaan look two more patients, he is here walking up and down and saying dirt drop inna drain. ‘Sugar Cane Trash’, stay a town and get some more patients, and stop interfering with what don’t concern you'," Creary further said.

And JLP Chairman Robert ‘Bobby’ Montague, who also joined in on the comments, made it abundantly clear that men from St Mary do not indulge in the practice of referring to other males as ‘sugar’, and that such names are only directed at females.

“St Mary man nuh call man sugar,” argued Montague.

“But we call our beautiful women sugar. So whenever a man refers to another man as sugar, then you know what them up to and what they mean. Our Labourite women are beautiful and they are indeed sugar, and, therefore, we in St Mary love our sweetness.”
