The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation says it has instituted measures to accommodate increased shopping activities in downtown Kingston for the festive season.

Mayor of Kingston Senator Delroy Williams says late shopping hours have been extended to midnight during weekdays and to 2:00 a.m on weekends.

Williams says the police have assured that there will be a strong presence in the area for the period to ensure safety for stores, vendors, and shoppers.

Chief Executive Officer at the municipal corporation Robert Hill says conditions would be more relaxed to facilitate the increase in vending and shopping but cautions that public order will be maintained.

“While we will be making allowances for increased business activity and street vending, those activities will be balanced with our partners in the JCF and our own Municipal Police team to ensure that order and security are maintained,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Williams warned party promoters to ensure that they have the requisite permits before hosting social events, adding that the municipal corporation has put measures in place to process applications speedily.

In addition, he also issued an advisory to event promoters to seek and obtain the approval of the municipal corporation before erecting entertainment signs.

He said the local authority is on a drive to remove all unapproved signs.
