St Jago kicks off 275th anniversary in praise and prayer
The St Jago High School kicked off its 275th anniversary celebrations with a church service at the Cathedral of St Jago de la Vega in Spanish Town on Sunday.
The St Catherine school unveiled a wide-ranging calendar of events, including a walk through Spanish Town this Tuesday, January 29; participation in Boys and Girls Athletics Championships in March; and a performing arts showcase called Culturefest in April. A banquet on November 9 and cocktail party on November 22 are also among the highlights of the yearlong celebration.
Principal Collette Feurtado-Pryce told The Gleaner that the church service marked Founder’s Day on January 27, 1744, when the school was declared open on Monk Street in Spanish Town.
“We continue to reign supreme. Our mission is to create students that are well rounded. We have been exemplary in academics, sports, the performing arts, and other areas, and we will continue to fly our flag high for the next 275 years,” she stated.
Feurtado-Pryce said she was overwhelmed by the support from her staff and students at the service and inspired by the commitment of parents.
“That’s the part that really heartened me – the number of parents who are committed and came here today at the cathedral and, of course, our past students.”
The Very Reverend Canon Collin Reid, who officiated at the service, paid tribute to the teaching corps, praising them for their contribution and dedication to service.
