Vanessa Kirkland Trial | Jury now deliberating

Published:Friday | February 8, 2019 | 12:53 PM

The seven-member jury is now deliberating on the fate of the three cops charged with the 2012 murder of Immaculate Conception High School student 16-year-old Vanessa Kirkland.

The jury retired at 12:49 p.m.

It is alleged that Constable Andrewain Smith, Durvin Hayles and Anna-Kay Bailey drove into Norman Lane in St Andrew on March 20, 2012, around 9:30 p.m. and opened fire on a blue Suzuki Swift motor car.

During the trial at the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston, defence attorneys argued that the cops acted in self defence having first been fired upon by occupants of the car.

Kirkland, who was in the blue Suzuki Swift motor car, was shot and killed.

In the nearly five-week trial, which started on January 7, 2018, thirteen witnesses were called to the stand and a total of 14 documents, including the post-mortem and ballistic reports, were admitted into evidence.
