A call has come from councillor for the Treadways division in St Catherine, Sydney Rose, for the operators of trucks which transport sugar cane along public roads to stop overloading the units following a crash on Thursday.

Rose, who heads the Health and Sanitation Committee of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation, says the excess canes often fall from the trucks, ending up in drains.

"I had a near miss yesterday as cane fell on my vehicle. Right now Road House and surrounding areas are out of internet as the truck tore down the pole," Rose said.

Meanwhile, several motorists have expressed similar concerns about the illegal practise of overloading trucks, which oftentimes causes accidents.

They are calling for the police to put an end to the practise.

Head of the St Catherine North police division, Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, says the police are working to address the situation and that errant drivers will be prosecuted once they are held.

On Thursday, a truck laden with sugar cane overturned near the Jericho to Linstead intersection in St Catherine with canes strewn about the roadway.
