St Catherine contractor charged for allegedly impersonating the police
The Spanish Town police in St Catherine have arrested and charged a man for allegedly impersonating a police officer.
He is 27-year-old contractor Alex Murray of Time and Patience district in the parish.
The police report that about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, they received information that a man purporting to be a policeman went to a school in search of a female teacher.
His actions aroused the suspicion of staff, and the police were contacted.
A police team responded, but the man was not at the scene.
The police later received additional information, and the vehicle the man was driving was intercepted.
According to the police, he was observed dressed in a black polo T-shirt bearing a police insignia.
The police further reported that the man allegedly identified himself as a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and showed himself as being dressed in a police uniform.
According to the police, Murray stated that he was assigned to the defunct Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC) and that he had left his police identification card at home.
He reportedly told investigators that a call could be made to C-TOC to properly identify him, and he also provided a regulation number.
The police say he was further questioned but failed to provide satisfactory answers.
He was subsequently arrested.
The police say checks revealed that he is a contractor with a telecommunications company.
They say a search was conducted at his home, where items of clothing worn by plainclothes police operatives were discovered.
Murray was charged following a question-and-answer session on March 17.
