A section of the main road in Belmont, Westmoreland has broken away following heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions, forcing vehicular traffic to be reduced to a single lane.

The incident, which occurred earlier today, has been linked to persistent rainfall since yesterday evening and strong wave action along the coastline.

Residents reported hearing a loud crashing sound before discovering that a section of the road had collapsed into the sea.

The National Works Agency (NWA) has since moved to secure the area, installing warning signs and cordoning off the affected section with caution tape.

The agency is urging motorists to proceed with extreme caution when travelling through the area.

The NWA said preliminary assessments suggest the erosion was caused by the road’s proximity to the sea, with high tides and constant wave activity weakening the roadway’s edge.

It added that it will continue to monitor the situation as conditions remain unstable.

For now, the damaged stretch remains reduced to a single lane, with traffic being managed on a temporary basis.

Police were earlier on location assisting with traffic control.

The affected area is currently the main point of concern along that stretch of road, and further evaluations are expected to determine the next steps for permanent repairs.
