Two constables charged for assaulting man in Spanish Town, to pay restitution

Two police constables have been charged for assaulting a man in Spanish Town, St Catherine and have agreed to pay $255,000 in restitution following mediation.

Constables Paul Banbury and Jason Hunter are charged in relation to an incident that occurred on October 17, 2024.

Following an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) ruled that both officers should be charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

It is alleged that the complainant was struck multiple times about the body by the officers.

According to INDECOM, medical evidence indicated that he sustained injuries to his thumb, jawbone, and ribs.

The policemen were brought before the St Catherine Parish Court.

The matter was subsequently referred to mediation, during which Banbury and Hunter agreed to pay the complainant a total of $255,000.

The payment is to be made by September.
