Eagle One gets the drop on Father Patrick in Eileen Cliggott Memorial
EAGLE ONE attacked topweight FATHER PATRICK coming off the home turn and outstayed his old rival up the straight to easily win yesterday’s Eileen Cliggott Memorial at six and a half furlongs.
Running in receipt of 15lbs from FATHER PATRICK, EAGLE ONE clocked the exact time, 1:19.3, which he posted January 8 when beating overnight-allowance runners.
FATHER PATRICK used his speed to brush NUCLEAR NOON off the lead but had no answer when EAGLE ONE pounced and quickened under Anthony Thomas, winning by four and three-quarter lengths.
A five-year-old United States-bred gelding, EAGLE ONE was outsped by stablemates PATRIARCH and GOD OF LOVE, carrying 119lbs, at six furlongs last time out, January 15.
Returning with 111lbs, EAGLE ONE relished the slower pace of the Eileen Cliggott, repeating his middle-distance victory over FATHER PATRICK, who he had beaten into third last June in the Eros Trophy at seven furlongs.
Meanwhile, Dane Dawkins rode back-to-back doubles, registering a spanking four-timer, his second of the season, including three winners for Gary Subratie, to go five clear of Robert Halledeen in the jockeys’ standings.
Dawkins opened his tally with ACERO at five furlongs straight, winning at odds of 3-1. He returned to land the sixth, running through along the rail at six furlongs with 5-1 shot PHAROAH IT IS for Subratie.
The leading rider closed his four-timer and the programme with Subratie’s OLDE WHARF at 5-2 and 1-2 favourite, HEAVENLY GLITTER.
Racing continues this afternoon with a nine-race card.
