World U-20 | No medal for Jamaica in 400m
Jamaica failed to medal in both the men's and women's 400 metres at the World Under-20 Championships at the Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium in Cali, Colombia on Thursday.
Dejanea Oakly finished the women's final sixth as medal hopeful Delano Kennedy was ejected from the men's final after a false start, while Shaemar Uter ended seventh.
In the women's 400 metres, Oakley, running in lane eight, struggled to stay with the early leaders, as India's Rupal set the pace.
Entering the final 100 metres, Oakley was well off the lead as Rupal started to tire, which allowed Great Britain's Yemi Mary John to come through and win the gold medal.
John did a personal best of 51.50 seconds with Damaris Mutunga of Kenya getting the silver medal in a national Under-20 record of 51.71 as Rupal ended with the bronze in 51.85. Oakley clocked 52.31 seconds.
Kennedy had an anxious wait as the officials pondered his fate after his infringement and after his ejection, Uter, in lane eight never challenged although he entered the home stretch close to the leaders in a tight race.
Uter ended in 46.36 seconds with South Africa's Lythe Pilllay capturing the gold in a personal best of 45.28. Steven McElroy of the United States of America (USA) won the silver in 45.65 with Yusuf Ali Abbas taking the bronze in 45.80, also a personal best.
