Tired of JPS’s estimated bills

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I write to express my deep frustration and growing anxiety over the persistent issue of receiving estimated bills from the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) since August 2023. Despite having a smart meter installed, which should ensure accurate readings, I have received 10 consecutive estimated bills.

Since November 2023, I have been diligently reporting this issue to JPS. However, their responses have been futile in resolving the problem. Each interaction leaves me more exasperated, as no actual readings have been reflected in my bills, despite JPS’s assurance that the smart meter is functioning correctly.

In February 2024, I escalated the issue to the Office of Utilities Regulation, hoping for a resolution. Unfortunately, this step has also not resulted in any meaningful change, and the problem persists.

This situation has caused me extreme frustration and anxiety. It is deeply troubling that a company as significant as JPS can fail to provide accurate billing for such an extended period. Customers like myself rely on precise readings to manage our finances effectively, and the consistent reliance on estimated bills undermines our trust in the service provider.

It feels as if customers have no rights, no avenue for redress, and are not heard. It seems the only way to be acknowledged is to resort to drastic measures like blocking roads, placarding the business, or relying on personal connections. This should not be the case in a system that is supposed to serve its customers fairly and transparently. The OUR, which should be the regulatory body ensuring accountability, appears inept in addressing and resolving these issues.

I urge JPS to take immediate and decisive action to address this issue. Accurate readings should be reflected in future bills, and a transparent explanation should be provided for the prolonged reliance on estimated billing. Furthermore, I call on the OUR to take a more proactive role in ensuring that utility companies adhere to their obligations and provide fair and accurate billing.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope that by bringing this issue to public attention, it will prompt the necessary steps to rectify the situation promptly.
