Nuclear concerns a call for transparency

THE EDITOR, Madam:

As Jamaica explores nuclear technology for civilian applications, concerns about the safety and security of its nuclear reactor have come to the forefront.

The University of the West Indies, Mona, is home to a 20-kilowatt research nuclear reactor, and the country is also investigating the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs) for electricity generation and other uses.

How protected is the reactor from potential threats, and what security measures are in place?

Are there any defence or security systems, such as an Iron Dome or plastic dome, to safeguard against aerial and other attacks?

Are Jamaica’s political parties and The University transparent about their nuclear activities, and can we rule out the pursuit of nuclear weapons production?

As a signatory to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons like Iran, is Jamaica committed to peaceful nuclear applications?

Are the Jamaican people and those living near the reactor adequately informed about the potential risks and benefits of nuclear technology?

Given these concerns, it’s essential for the Jamaican Government and relevant authorities to provide clear information about the country’s nuclear activities, security measures, and commitments to peaceful nuclear applications. Transparency and accountability are crucial to addressing these concerns and ensuring public trust. Shouldn’t the Jamaican Government/UWI provide more information about its nuclear activities and security measures?
