A timeless love story with Matthew and Brittany
Some love stories bloom slowly, quietly, intentionally, and with a kind of ease that feels meant to be. That’s how it was for Brittany Coke and Matthew Webster. What started as a passing encounter became a friendship, then a partnership, and now, a forever kind of love. On Saturday, April 26, they exchanged vows at the University Chapel on the Mona campus of The University of the West Indies, in a beautiful, timeless black-and-white-themed ceremony surrounded by friends and family.
From very early on, though they didn’t realise it at the time, there was something special between the pair.
As Brittany tells Island Wedding , “Very early on, it was evident that Matthew was different. To this day, Matthew is different. He’s very special and a character like his is one-of-a-kind. His aura lights up any room he walks into.”
Their story began in passing. One random weeknight at TGI Fridays, Brittany was celebrating a co-worker’s birthday while Matthew, a friend of a friend, happened to be there. Nothing came of that encounter, but almost a year later their paths crossed again when Brittany started a new job at the same company as Matthew.
Matthew quickly noticed Brittany’s punctuality and organisation, qualities that stood out to him in the busy office.
“She was well dressed, well put together, and always very early. I would get to the office before most people, and somehow she was already at work. While her desk was always well organised, my work desk was always messy. The organised desk definitely caught my eye,” he shared, smiling.
When Matthew came over to introduce himself formally, Brittany didn’t immediately remember their previous meeting. Blushing with embarrassment, she soon felt comfortable in her new workspace thanks to Matthew’s warm and welcoming nature.
As time went on, their connection grew beyond casual greetings, blossoming gradually through light-hearted conversations and moments of teamwork.
Brittany recalls, “Eventually we became great friends. From working on projects together, to quirky conversations whenever either of us passed by each other’s cubicles. It became pretty obvious to me, and everyone in the surrounding cubicles, that there was something special there.”
One day, when Matthew wasn’t feeling well, he found a care package of vitamins and flu tablets left on his desk. He thought to himself how very thoughtful Brittany was, and that small gesture marked the beginning of something special.
As for their first date, it started with a bit of playful teasing.
“Our first date was a movie date. We went to see The Joker. I had already watched it with my friend and was telling him about my weekend the following Monday at work. He jokingly asked how come I hadn’t invited him to the movies,” she said, adding with a chuckle. “A date was set for Friday and that evening I watched The Joker, again, while Matthew slept.”
Matthew added lightly, “I definitely slept through a good portion of the movie. I mean, I was doing an MBA programme and working full time, so I was heavily sleep-deprived.”
After the movie, they went for a nightcap at Terra Nova. They took time to get to know each other better and found it hard to end the night early. Eventually, they shared their first kiss, which Matthew admits was the most memorable part.
When asked what she admires most about her spouse, Brittany highlights Matthew’s steady presence, shared values, and his calm nature.
“Matthew leads with logic, while I lead with emotion, so he helps me stay grounded. He’s also extremely family-oriented, which I love. We’re on the same page with a lot of our family planning and aspirations, and we work so seamlessly together to make it a reality,” Brittany explained.
As for Matthew, there’s no shortage of qualities he appreciates in his partner in life: “She is a planner, a nurturer, ambitious, obviously stunningly beautiful, and a good cook. I mean, there are many things to list, but [she’s] all the right things I looked for in a partner, more so a wife.”
Brittany distinctly remembers the moment she realised she was falling for Matthew. It was around Christmas, and though they’d only been dating a few months, they’d grown close. Just before she left town for the holidays, he gave her a gift.
“I opened it to find a brand new KitchenAid stand mixer, and I immediately burst into tears,” she said. Baking had become a new hobby that year, and Matthew had clearly been paying attention.
For Matthew, love crystallised on a December 29 beach trip to Winnifred Beach in Portland. “Brittany helped me plan the road trip for a big group of friends – snacks, drinks, cups, everything. Without her, that trip wouldn’t have been as successful.” The outing also doubled as her first real introduction to his close circle.
“At some point in the day, I snuck her away to tell her I love her for the first time,” he reminisced.
‘PUT A RING ON IT’
On Easter Sunday in 2023, Matthew decided to make things official during a weekend stay at the Rockhouse Hotel in Negril. Though Brittany was feeling under the weather, unaware she was pregnant, Matthew quietly planned the special moment.
After a morning spat that made him reconsider, Matthew was determined by dinner to go through with his plan. He asked a few of the hotel staff to record the moment as he got down on one knee.
“I was very surprised because I wasn’t expecting it! We knew we wanted to get married; I just didn’t know when he was going to pop the question,” Brittany admits, adding that she, of course, said ‘yes’.
TIME TO SAY ‘I DO’
Without a wedding planner, Brittany took the lead, bringing her creativity and organisational skills to the forefront as she designed an unforgettable celebration that reflected their personalities and love story.
She also took the lead on baking the desserts and wedding cake.
The reception followed at Pavilion Gardens in Hope Gardens, where the black-and-white theme came to life through elegant décor, accented with silver and Brittany’s favourite flower, baby’s breath.
Describing the day as a blur, Mrs Webster said, “Being surrounded by love made every moment so special. Walking down the aisle with a light drizzle felt like something straight out of a movie.”
Mr Webster added, “Everything felt perfect, even the little surprises like the rain. It was amazing to celebrate with everyone who means so much to us.”
