Seven killed in road crashes in six days... 10 tips to keep you safe
The police are reporting that seven people have been killed in road crashes since the start of the month of August.
Many of the accidents are the result of speeding.
Here are 10 tips to keep you safe:
1. Slow down!
Most motor vehicle accidents are as a direct result of speeding.
2. Buckle up!
It has been proven that wearing a seat belt reduces the rate of serious injuries and deaths in car crashes by 50 per cent. One of the main reasons seatbelts are so helpful is that they prevent people from being thrown from the car during a crash.
3. Do not drink and drive
Any alcohol, even a small amount, can impair your driving, so be a safe driver, don’t drink and drive.
4. Anticipate
Observe and expect other road users and use your mirrors regularly.
5. Keep your distance
You should have at least one car length of space between your car and the car in front of you.
6. Use car seats
All small children should be secured into a car seat before driving in a vehicle.
7. Walk on the sidewalk
Walk on the sidewalk facing the oncoming traffic. If there is no sidewalk, you should walk on the right side of the road.
8. Don’t text while driving
Texting and driving is especially dangerous because it incorporates all types of driving distractions:
Visual: Takes your eyes off the road.
Manual: Takes your hands off the steering wheel.
Cognitive: Takes your focus away from safe driving.
9. Take a break if you are tired
If you are tired pull off the road into a safe well-lit area and rest.
10. Stay in your lane
Always keep to your left when driving. To overtake, ensure the way is clear, pass on the right and get back in your lane.
