The Jamaica Combined Cadet Force had its resource centre significantly transformed on Labour Day by dedicated employees of The Jamaica National Group.

Organised by the JN Foundation, the 35-member volunteer corps spent the day painting and carrying out infrastructural work to improve both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the space.

Omar Wright, lead for environment and community development at the JN Foundation, noted that the work was a continuation of efforts started last year to enhance the facilities of the country’s Combined Cadet Force.

“This year we returned, honouring our commitment to building sustainable partnerships. Our collaboration with the Cadet Force is not just a one-off effort, but a lasting, symbiotic relationship that is beneficial for both the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force and the JN Foundation,” he said.

The volunteers undertook a range of activities, such as tree planting, which will not only add to the greenery of the surroundings, but also underscored the importance of environmental conservation. The newly planted trees are expected to provide shade and serenity for the cadets.

Additionally, the foundation’s team gave the resource centre a fresh coat of paint, revitalising the space where cadets engage in educational activities. The vibrant, new look is anticipated to create an environment more conducive for learning and development.

One of the most notable improvements was the tiling of the area, funded by personal donations from JN Group employees. This upgrade has significantly enhanced the durability and cleanliness of the space, making it more suitable for various activities.

The Jamaica National Group also donated furniture and equipment valued at $2.5 million. The equipment is expected to enhance the operations of the Cadet Force and ensure that the cadets are housed in a comfortable and efficient environment for training and development.

The Jamaica Combined Cadet Force expressed gratitude for the support and efforts of the foundation. Captain Dale Maitland of the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force said the improvements to the resource centre will provide a comfortable environment for the cadets to conduct educational activities.

“Thank you, JN, for this partnership. This is our second year and you have now adopted us officially,” he said.

The occasion was nostalgic for Parris Lyew-Ayee, chairman of the JN Foundation, who echoed the JN Group’s commitment to supporting the cadets.

“It fills me with immense pride and joy to see the Jamaica Combine Cadet Force thriving. As a former cadet myself during my days at Excelsior High School, I can personally attest to the profound impact this organisation has on shaping young minds and fostering future leaders,” he said.

“At The Jamaica National Group, we deeply understand the critical role the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force plays in shaping the leaders of tomorrow,” he attested.

For several volunteers of The Jamaica National Group corps, the project was also meaningful and satisfying.

“I am happy to be here today giving back because I have a passion for service, and I love assisting people. Giving back will benefit me and the wider community,” said Shanice Bennett, administrative assistant, JN Bank.

Shamoy Martin of JN Life, who said she loves to volunteer, was equally pleased with her participation in the project. “Volunteering is natural for me, and it feels so good to give back. Today, I learnt to paint, and I was told that I was good at it,” she said.
