Titchfield, St Mary retain Eastern Champs titles
Defending champions Titchfield High and St Mary High schools retained their titles in contrasting style following the final day of action at the Eastern Athletics Championships at the National Stadium yesterday.
Titchfield scored a whopping 367 points to top the boys, with second-place finishers Oberlin way behind on 212. St Mary High (200), Port Antonio (180), and Happy Grove (169) closed out the top five.
In what was an extremely close affair among the girls, St Mary High tallied 295 points as a battling Marymount ended second with 284.33. Completing the top five were Titchfield (227), Oberlin (178.33), and Port Antonio (162).
Winning for head coach of St Mary High Jerron Barrett came as a bonus
“I am kind of surprised in winning as the aim was to get athletes prepared for Carifta Trials and ISSA Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships. Getting a win was not on our bucket list, but we will take it anyway,” said Barrett.
Yesterday’s final day was highlighted by Jaquan Soudan of Happy Grove. Like he did on Monday’s first day of competition when he broke the Boys’ Class 1 long jump record with his 7.30-metre win, he returned yesterday for a second landmark, soaring to an impressive 2.06 metres to win the high jump.
Happy Grove also had success in the Boys’ Class 2 high jump as Dandre McKenzie won with a height of 1.85m, the same mark achieved by second-place finisher Marcodean Moore of St Mary High. Moore’s teammate, Desjaun Lewis, was third at 1.80m.
In the 100 metres, Shayan Smith of St Mary High posted the fastest time among the females. She won Class 2 in 12.22 seconds, ahead of Sanique Williams of Marymount (12.51) and Tasanee Hamilton of Titchfield, third in 12.76. Smith returned later to complete the double, winning the 200 metres in 24.67.
Fantesia Hamilton of Marymount won Class 4 in 12.76, ahead of Shantavia Henry of Titchfield (12.86) and Camile Richards of St Mary High (12.88).
Marymount also won in Classes 1 and 3.
In Class 3, Sherrie-Harris Lawrence won in 12.24, while in Class 1, Gezerah Saunders captured the event in 12.38. Saunders also won the 200 metres in 25.78.
Buff Bay High’s Davian Myers posted 10.87 to win the Boys’ Class 1 100m, ahead of the St Mary High duo of Nishawn Wollaston (11.01) and Navardo Pittersgill (11.04).
Anthony Rochester of Titchfield took Class 2 in 10.84 while Dejaun Brown of Buff Bay won Class 3 in 11.54. Rochester was also victorious in the 200m, posting 22.19.
Earlier, Shaneca Harris of Port Antonio High continued her good season form in the Open Girls’ 400m hurdles. Ranked number two in the event so far this season, she captured the title yesterday in 1:01.22, ahead of Marissa Stewart of Titchfield, who was second in 1:07.28.
