Floodgates for Rio Cobre
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, ODPEM says it’s looking at installing floodgates at the entrances to the Rio Cobre in St Catherine which will prevent motorists from using the gorge when it is flooded.
Director General at the ODPEM, Ronald Jackson says the floodgates will be placed at both the north and south entrances to the gorge.
Mr. Jackson says once the river gets to six or eight feet, there is a great possibility of flooding.
Mr. Ronald Jackson, Director General at the ODPEM says signs will be placed at several locations to inform motorists of the condition of the gorge once the river is in spate.
The areas proposed for signs to be erected are at Bog Walk, along the Spanish Town bypass and at the round -a- bout at Old Harbour.
He says signs will also be placed on the Mandela highway.
Mr. Jackson says funding for the project is yet to be identified.
