THE EDITOR, Sir:WE ARE a nation of whiners and I say this with love and respect for my fellow Jamaicans. I am a current affairs junkie. I monitor the media on a daily basis. I read all the print news, listen to and watch the various talk shows.

THE EDITOR, Sir: I DO not expect my lone voice to make a difference because, in Jamaica, justice is not only blind but deaf, dumb - and slothful as well.

THE EDITOR, Sir: PRIME MINISTER Bruce Golding is doing a good job, along with his cabinet, despite the recent errors by his party.

WE ARE frequently reminded that the key to successful cancer treatment is early detection, followed by appropriate, timely intervention in the health-care system. In the current free health-care system in Jamaica, the results of a biopsy, Pap smear reports and other diagnostic reports take many months (up to a year) in being returned to the health-care provider, thus delaying diagnosis and possible treatment.

I am appalled and shocked to have read an article stating that between 1999 and 2009, trigger-happy cops killed 2,000 civilians in alleged gun battles.

Writing in The Gleaner of July 31, Reporter Daraine Luton, recalls some words of Senator Sandrea Falconer, addressing the Senate on Jamaica's national HIV policy for the workplace. Luton quotes Falconer as saying, "We need to look at how persons with HIV/AIDS are discriminated against in places of public accommodation..."

English is the language of commerce, and the most widely spoken language. It would certainly make more sense and better use of those linguists to spend some time teaching the English language to the masses than to be translating the Bible into some dialect that is spoken by a few folk in a country where the official language is supposed to be English.

While the community of Buckfield celebrates the 'heroism' of the policeman who shot 'Chen-Singh' as he lay on the ground, and lament the death of the woman he stabbed to death, they all forget that neither party needed to die.

It is an embarrassing situation to be left stranded on the sidewalk of bustling New Kingston with laptop, company property, and as much of your personal effects that can be salvaged before the wrecker tows away your motor vehicle.

The Editor, Sir: In response to your thought-enriching editorial in Saturday's Gleaner (August 7), should you be asking 'Do you love Jamaica?' or rather 'How do I love thee, Jamaica?'Either way, the word 'love' is often misunderstood.

The Editor, Sir: Two decades ago, our education system was being copied by a number of developed countries on the European side of the globe. Under the late D.R.B. Grant's leadership, the early-childhood sector gained much-needed recognition...

The Editor, Sir, I want to really have a conversation with you today to see if we can figure out what went wrong or whether, in fact, it did.

The Editor, Sir, In his opinion article "Population control as public policy", Colin Steer criticised respondents to The Gleaner who "have pointed to Europe's ageing population and reduced pool of young people...

The Editor, Sir: This year's Grand Gala, I believe, was a success. Integrating the various ethnic groups was an excellent move showing much insight on the part of Culture Minister Olivia Grange...

A man, as the well-known story goes, was passing by a busy construction site. Curious, he asked the first man he met: "What are you doing?"

The Sunday Gleaner of January 31, 2010, under the caption 'Cool Ruler' dark horse for the Grammy Awards', incorrectly referred to Phil Pratt as the producer of Gregory Isaac's Love is Overdue.

Jamaica's 49th year as an independent nation has taken off on its journey, with 'Dudusgate' and its progeny snapping at its heels. It was a long night of distress that enveloped Year 48, and the hundreds-pound gorilla which was created by, and which haunts Jamaica House has spawned many children.

I support the decision made by the Supreme Court that the Government of Jamaica should honour its contract to public-sector workers and pay up on the seven per cent increase on wages.

It is fortuitous that in the week in which we celebrate our Emancipation and our Independence we find ourselves being told by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) that they disapprove of tax breaks given to the tourism industry.

It has become of utmost importance to me to understand the role of diplomacy in today's society, to understand how euphemism changes the outlook of a majority of us Jamaicans on matters that sometimes are of dire importance.

I read in Thursday's Gleaner, with more than a little concern, that a team of police investigators is now trying to locate the person who videotaped last week's shooting of a man by lawmen in Buckfield, St Ann, as well as the cellular phone he used to capture the controversial images.

Sometimes a letter to the editor reveals more of the writer than the subject written about. On occasions, this is deliberate and sometimes it is not. In the instant case, one Dave McFarlane reveals his religious bigotry and intellectual immaturity quite inadvertently when he tries to criticise Dr Carolyn Cooper.

Over the past couple of months, the Government has undertaken the restructuring of the public sector. This is a move to which I give full support if it will benefit the Jamaican people by preventing unnecessary spending and improving efficiency (or better yet, creating it).
